2016 Christmas Appeal

Christmas Appeal 2016
Baby Boxes for the marginalised Roma communities of Bulgaria

Bulgarian Roma girls are amongst the neediest people in Europe. Poverty drives them to beg, steal and prostitute themselves.

It is a burden for parents to provide for their daughters, so they marry them off as early as possible.

Most Roma girls become mothers when teenagers - and often they are young teenagers.

On top of this, they do not usually have any instruction on healthcare or parenting, only meeting a medical person for the first time when the baby is born.

This is outrageous. Something has to be done.

What is a Baby Box?
For 75 years, Finland's expectant mothers have been given a cardboard box by the State.

It's like a starter kit of clothes, sheets, toys etc. and the box can even be used as a bed.

Some say it helped Finland achieve one of the world's lowest infant mortality rates.

From 1st January 2017, every baby born in Scotland will receive a box of 'essential items' to symbolise a 'level playing field' for all children.

So we asked ourselves - can Mission Possible do this for the Roma teenage mothers of Bulgaria?

With your help we can.

Our dream is for more than a Baby Box
Our project will be much more than simply distributing baby boxes.
It will include antenatal, postnatal and parenting skill classes provided through our team in Bulgaria.  And the dream also includes reaching Roma communities we do not yet reach.

And as with all our projects, it will be undergirded by the good news of Jesus Christ.
It is a big dream bringing transformation to these remote Roma communities on the foothills of the Balkan Mountains.

Our appeal

It would be a joy if you feel able to partner with us on this new initiative through both giving and prayer.

During 2017, we will send you regular updates on the project.

The Baby Boxes are made up of several essential items, so any financial donation, however small, is most gratefully received by us.

The cost of a complete Baby Box is £60.

Please do not send us any items for the Baby Boxes as these will be sourced by our team in Bulgaria contributing to their local economy.

You can give by

• making a secure online donation by clicking the donate button on the homepage.

• sending a cheque payable to MPUK to Mission Possible UK, PO Box 597, Huntingdon, Cambs PE29 9ET

• transferring your gift direct into our bank account:  Mission Possible UK   Sort code 40-52-40 Account 00092063

Your much valued gift will be acknowledged unless you request otherwise.

Thank you so very much

Wishing you His joy and peace this Christmas

Our new Eastern Europe Development Officer Ian Sinkinson, who used to work for Tearfund’s disaster response team, has recently returned from Bulgaria and reports
‘I was shocked by the level of poverty I observed in the Bulgarian Roma Communities. It is scandalous that in modern Europe Roma mothers should have to bring up their new born babies in such conditions. The Baby Box Project can transform the lives of both mothers and babies – do please help!
